2011年、日本は未曾有の大震災に見舞われました。東日本大震災です。2万人あまりの人が地震や津波で亡くなられました。
震災の後、被災地を訪ねた僕がそこで目にしたのは、多くの人が海に向かって祈っている姿でした。
そのとき、この祈りを描くことで、自分に何かできないかと思い、この作品づくりを進めようと決めました。
祈りは、人々の心に静寂と平和をもたらし、生きる勇気をもたらしてくれます。
医療の世界では祈りの特殊な力が認められています。それは、祈りの力が植物の生長を早めたり、人の遺伝子レベルに働きかけて、祈られた人を癒す効果です。祈りはまた、祈る人自身にも心の安定をもたらします。
このような効果は科学的には証明することは難しいといわれています。けれども、自然に向き合って祈りを捧げるとき、私たちはその力を感じ取っているのではないでしょうか。
私は神様を信じています。祈りを捧げる人々も、多分同じだと思います。しかし、それは唯一の存在でもないし，天上にいる一人の年老いた男の事でもなし。
被災地を訪ねた時、私はあるスピーチを思い出していました。
それはダライ・ラマです。
「この地球はもうこれ以上の成功者を必要としていない」
「この地球が本当に必要なのは、平和をつくれる人、癒す人、再建する人、語り継ぐ人、そして愛情を持てる人である」
僕はこのダライ・ラマのスピーチに「祈る人」を加えたいと思いました。祈りは平和を求める人の心に絶対に必要だと思ったからです。祈りは、被災者のためだけでなく、すべての人に必要なものであると思いました。
『祈りは、平和をつくれる人、癒す人、再建する人、語り継ぐ人、そして愛情を持てる人に力を与える。祈りは、被災者ためだけのものではなく、すべての人に必要なものである』
僕一人では被災地を救うことはできません。人の心に平和をもたらすこともできないでしょう。それでも、変化のための小さな石ころを水に投げ込むことは僕にもできるかもしれません。石ころはとても小さいけれど、たくさんの波紋をつくって、やがて、どこかの岸辺へとたどりつくことでしょう。
そう、この小さな石が、僕のプロジェクト「BORDER」なのです。
平和を作る人は何処にいるのでしょう。一体、癒す人は何処にいるのでしょう。
再建する人は・・，継ぐ人は・・・、愛を持てる人は・・・・。
そして、祈りの力を知るものは・・。
それは、私たちの心の中にいるのです。
僕は、自分の写真の中で、祈りの中に隠された力を表現したいと思っています。

In March 2011, Japan had a big disaster, the Great East Japan Earthquake. More than 20 thousand people's lives were taken by the quake and the tsunami. When I visited the stricken area, I saw a lot of people were praying toward the sea. I was inspired by the scene, and since. At that time I decided to start the photographic project 'BORDER' as a dedication to those prayers.
Praying gives us calm and peace in our hearts. It also brings us hope to live. As being proven in medical world, praying might have a special power, like making plants grow faster. It is also said that praying itself works on the human gene and that it has a great effect to heal people's heart and make us calm. Unfortunately it hasn't been revealed why praying is so effective, but I try to express the hidden energy of prayer in my photographs.
When I saw people praying in the stricken area, a quote of the Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama came to my mind. In his speech, he said 'This planet doesn't need more successful people. The planet desperately needs more peacemakers, healers, restorers, storytellers and lovers of all kinds.'
I was so impressed by him that I decided to add him as 'the prayer' into my prayers' list. For me, praying is absolutely necessary for people who long for peace. Praying needs not only for victims of the disasters but for all of us to achieve peace. I believe it gives us all strength and hope.
I don't think I can save or help victims by myself. Maybe it's hard to make their lives calm and peace by myself, too. But I guess I could make something change with my photographs. It is like throwing a small stone into the water and making many ripples. Even though they take time, they will get to the shore. My photographic project 'BORDER' might be small, but I hope it would be spread out to the world as the ripples.
Now remember the quote of Dalai Lama that I mentioned before...
Where are they? How can we find them?
They are in our hearts.
From my photographs I want people to feel the hidden energy of prayer that I try to express.
